Asphalt is installed over a 4-8” substrate of compacted granular fill, something that is sturdy, yet drains well. The asphalt itself is a mixture of rock, sand, and asphalt binder. Over time, moisture through rain and thaw can wash away the substrate, and the combination of water and sunlight can start a deterioration of the asphalt binder, leading to a breaking up of the asphalt surface, and thus the need for asphalt patching or pothole repair.
