The Purpose of Storm Drains
Storm drains and sumps are primarily used to collect pavement runoff water to prevent it from collecting on the surface of roads and sidewalks. The purpose of storm drains is to direct water flow away from the streets and sidewalks to a nearby water source such as a lake, river, or ocean. Storm drains both create safer road conditions and protect your yard and driveway from flooding with water during a heavy downpour.
When Damage Occurs
The most common issue behind pavement deterioration is water collection on the surface. Moisture damage caused by improper drainage decreases the strength and durability of asphalt. Asphalt left vulnerable to excessive moisture for too long can develop potholes and other deterioration. Eckles Paving also provides asphalt maintenance services for roads and parking lots that have been damaged by excessive water collection. However, proper installation of storm drains and sumps will decrease the risk of asphalt cracking and rutting.
Storm Drain Installation
Storm drains are constructed by either tying into an existing storm drain system or creating a new drain field area below grade (sump). Drains need to be placed in the correct areas of the pavement in order to achieve proper sloping into the new drain. Storm drain systems are separate from sewage systems and are not designed to remove pollutants.
